Barriers (in everyday life) 4

The hedges here are used as used as ‘soft’ screens and barriers, mainly to prevent the public seeing beyond, or wandering onto private property. Hedges and climbers are used to soften perimeter walls and railings, often with ‘security’ planting of species with thorns.

There is also an example here of hedge planting within a railing enclosure: you can look at these plants, but don’t touch.

The soft screen idea is taken a step further in the Kings Cross development zone, in which fake bucolic landscape is used as a temporary screen to prevent building works being seen and undermining the ambience for the existing tenants.
