It’s been a while

For what has felt like much of the summer I’ve been involved in the Global Arts Project, a collaboration between Central Saint Martins and Tokyo University of the Arts. Its central themes were history and identity, and it took place over 3-4 weeks, spanning London, Tokyo and Hong Kong; with lots of trips, visits, talks and workshops at each stop.

I was amused to discover that Tokyo has plenty of prohibitive signs and objects. On the subway, gated walls separate passengers from track, while signs remind passengers amongst other things to observe ‘good manners’, not to be distracted by mobile phones and not to rush. Men are not allowed in certain carriages at rush hour, and the use of official fluorescent batons can be observed in the impromptu creation of human barriers to control pedestrian flow. Here are a few examples.
